Givskud Zoo – Zootopia or Løveparken (Lion Park) as it was then called, was founded in 1969 by Jacob Hansen who owned a small zoo in Vejle. He had travelled to Europe for inspiration for the first Danish safari park with free-ranging lions. Despite many teething problems and sceptical authorities, the Lion Park in Givskud opened on 12 August 1969, and from the very first season the park was a great success.

Free-range animals
The idea of allowing visitors to experience free-ranging animals in large enclosures proved to be very viable. In the years following its opening, the Lion Park expanded to include a number of other animal species. At the time, the idea was a fresh alternative to the more traditional urban zoos. Today, Givskud Zoo in its modern form with large facilities is one of the best opportunities to present larger animals in a dignified way.
Jacob Hansen died in 1971, and the family continued to run Løveparken until 1983. The park was then transformed into an independent institution and changed it’s name to Givskud Zoo.
In 1989, the zoo became state-recognised, which means that the park receives an annual financial subsidy from the Ministry of Culture.
A modern zoo
For over 50 years, Givskud Zoo – Zootopia has provided knowledge and great animal experiences to its guests. The animal population has grown, and today the park is home to around 50 different animal species. In 1989, the park was state-recognised and it’s now a modern zoo with the obligations that come with it. Education, conservation of endangered species and research are the fundamental purposes of the zoo today.
Nature in decline
We have just left the most nature-destructive century in human history. The Earth’s rapidly growing population is causing the natural habitats of animals to disappear. Millions of square kilometres of rainforest, wetlands, coral reefs and grasslands are being converted into farmland to feed ever more mouths. Increasingly intensive exploitation of natural resources, pollution and rising energy consumption have upset the natural balance.
In the 20th century alone, thousands of plant and animal species have disappeared from the Earth, many of them before they were even discovered and named. One of the tasks of a modern zoo is to work against this sad trend and preserve endangered species before they disappear completely.

Im Zoo Givskud gibt es zwar keine Eisbären, dafür aber unfassbare große Gehege für Andenbären und Gorillas.
Auch die anderen Gehege sind wunderbar gestaltet.
Für deutsche Verhältnisse ist es ungewohnt mit dem Auto durch die Tiergehege zu fahren, den Tieren macht das – offensichtlich – nichts aus.
Wenn sie jetzt noch Eisbären hätten, wäre der Zoo perfekt.

Ein Zoo zum Durchfahren ist in der Tat aussergewöhnlich. Kann man dabei überhaupt intensive Beobachtungen machen, wenn sich die Autos vor manchen Gehegen stauen?

Die Bilder sind super und die Tiere sehen sehr gut aus.
Wir haben in der Nähe den Serengeti Park Hodenhagen. Man fährt auch mit dem Auto durch eine große Gelände. Auch Tiger und Löwen haben die Bereiche, wo man ohne Gitter an den Tieren vorbei fährt.

Mir ist nicht ganz klar, ob man die ganze Zeit im Auto sitzen muss und die Tiere nur im Vorbeifahren oder vom Parkplatz beobachten kann? Oder gibt es auch Fußwege und man kann an die Anlagen herangehen?
Deine Fotos sind jedenfalls sehr schön und die Tiere machen einen guten Eindruck. Besonders gut gefallen mir die Löwinnen, der Bison mit seinem gewaltigen Kopf, die Gruppe Breitmaulnashörner, die sitzenden Brillenbären und der Riesenotter(?) mit dem Fisch im Maul.

Es gibt Gehege bzw. Tierarten, die man nur im Auto sehen kann.
Wenn es Ferien oder Feiertage gibt, staut es sich gewaltig im Zoo im Tiergehege, da ist ein Beobachten oder länger Verweilen unmöglich.
Manche Tiere – Bären, Gorillas, Nashörner, Löwen usw. sieht man auch bzw. nur zu Fuß.
Nur da ist langes Beobachten – stehen bzw. sitzen möglich.
Der Zoo ist definitiv nicht für Fußgänger kreiert worden. Schon allein weil er sehr abgelegen ist.
Wer Brillenbären und Gorillas mag, ist aber dort bestens aufgehoben, wenn er ein Auto besitzt.
Ja, das ist ein Riesenotter.
