Today would have been Knut’s 17th birthday but unfortunately he has to celebrate it in the Polar Bear Heaven. Time flies so fast but the lovely memories will never fade away!
These photos were taken after Knut’s third birthday 2009 when Giovanna was still staying in Berlin.
Good morning to you!
The couple got along quite well although it was obvious that Queen Giovanna ruled in the enclosure.
However, sometimes even Knut showed who’s wearing the trousers. 🙂
Small arguments were daily on the schedule but they were soon forgotten and our white sweeties were friends again.
I hope you will have a happy birthday with Tosca, Nancy and Katjuscha!

That year Yoghi was living in the Tierpark Berlin and Giovanna was with Knut in Berlin Zoo.
After they returned to Munich Giovanna was a much changed partner thanks to Knut. Nobby and his sister Nela came along. Nobby always reminds me of Knut.
He is small but very clever.

Yes, indeed. Those were the days when Knut met Giovanna.
I remember exactly where I was when I saw the pictures of the first meeting of the two white bears.

Es war eine so schöne Zeit..
Knut und Giovanna bzw Gianna, wie sie in Berlin genannt wurde, miteinander auf der Anlage zu erleben, hat mich sehr froh gemacht! Mir ist in Erinnerung geblieben, dass Knut immer etwas von seinen Leckereien, die er bekommen hatte, für Giovanna übrig ließ und Giovanna hat stets nach dieser “Liebesgabe oder Freundschaftsgeschenk” gesucht, wenn sie raus auf die Anlage kam…
KNUT wird immer in meinem Herzen bleiben ❣ Unter all den Eisbären, die mit Knut in mein Leben gekommen sind, wird er immer ein ganz besonderer Eisbär bleiben…🐻❄️💝💖

That’s a lovely series of photos you took of Knut and Giovanna.
They had already grown closer by then and Knut was also learning to share, namely his beloved surfboard. She usually stole the treats from him, at least that’s how I remember it.
Dear Mervi, you can see these photos again and again and they still touch us just as much today as they did many years ago.

I was sometimes a bit angry with Giovanna because she always ate Knut’s pumpkins. He didn’t have a chance against the “Gewittertulpe”… (original tone Doris)
But this confrontation between the two bears was wanted by the keepers, because Knut should learn to assert himself. I was very relieved when he learnt to relax, developed self-confidence and the two began to play with each other.
Thank you for these bittersweet memories!
I will never forget this dear bear.
