Three days at Project Polar

YWP is on the edge of a busy community. But Hamish has plenty of space to look for interesting things.

At the moment he is less interested in the nearby houses and more anxious about his best friend Nobby in the enclosure opposite.

The newest of the three original enclosures has also received a hard path to help the bears’ paws. Like Victor this has become Luka’s beach.

The YWP Polars are usually muddy but happy.

The kayak has become a popular toy for YWP Polars. Local donors know where to send their old boats. Here Sisu gives a kayak the Polar test.

polar26

Sisu’s wound is healing despite his constant rolling in the grass. He waits patiently with Nobby to get into the den tunnels.

polar27

Polar Bears communicate by scent, sound and the occasional bite as here.

polar28

A closer view of Sisu’s scar shows his black skin, but he is quite at ease.

polar29

Hamish in the enclosure opposite also waiting by the dens. He is getting nearly as big as Luka. The complexity of the den cages and walkways can be seen.

polar31

Hamish has inherited his mother Victoria’s determination and father Arktos’s size. He knows how to make his presence felt.

polar32

Hamish loses no opportunity to try and find Nobby on the opposite enclosure. When he stands up he gives visitors a sight of how size matters in the Polar Bear world. But as the background shows you don’t have to travel to Svalbard or Churchill to see it.
