Gerda and Kai as singles

22.8.2025 – Photos by Arkadi Laptenko and Sergej Iltjakov

Gerda and Kai in the Novosibirsk Zoo have been separated for some time now and live in neighbouring enclosures. Hopefully their time together won’t result in cub/s this time. For the time being there’s enough place for all four polar bears in this zoo but new cubs would make it too crowded. As far as I know even Nordi is still there.

Gerda can now go fishing without risking her fish being pinched by Kai. 🙂

How wonderful to eat my fish in peace!

Hahaa, no Kai in sight!!

Of course, Kai had been fishing, too.

After the fishy meal the big guy noticed there were lots of toys in the ‘pool’.

OK, after it!

Oh bear, this was a big one ….

… but, naturally, it’s quite small in my powerful paws! 🙂

There was even a gigantic white ball but Kai throws it as if it was a feather.

The small containers can be quite fun as well.

In the heat it’s wise to keep your head cold! 🙂

It looks like both Gerda and Kai are quite happy with the current situation.

  1. Dear Arkadi, Sergej and Mervi!
Visitors always enjoy seeing polar bears being treated to tasty treats by their keepers and kept busy with toys. This is essential when keeping such animals in captivity. Gerda and Kai are not bored as singles and both look content.
However, I fear that their tête-à-tête in spring did not remain without consequences.
    We shall see…

    Hugs
    Anke

  2. Dear Mervi,
I also hope that Kai and Gerda’s togetherness will have no consequences and that Mama Gerda can now enjoy her retirement.

The great pictures show that both of them are doing well and are not bored.
Thank you and best regards to Arkadi and Sergej!

  4. Wo sind eigentlich die “Kinder” gelandet?

    Ich stimme den Vorschreibern(innen) zu:
    Bitte nicht schon wieder Nachwuchs,
so niedlich kleine Eisbären sein mögen…
