Da sich bei unserem Eisbär Kap der Gesundheitszustand in den vergangenen Tagen erneut etwas verschlechtert hat, wurde entschieden, dass er in den kommenden Tagen wieder im Innenbereich bleibt. Dort ist eine direkte Beobachtung des Tiers und vor allem auch eine regelmäßige Medikamentengabe besser zu realisieren.
As our polar bear Kap’s health has deteriorated again slightly in recent days, it has been decided that he will remain indoors for the next few days. This will make it easier to observe the animal directly and, above all, to administer medication regularly.
Vor rund vier Wochen hatte es begonnen, dass es Kap nicht mehr gut ging. Der Allgemeinzustand des Tiers wurde immer kritischer. Das mit seinen 24 Jahren älteste Eisbärmännchen im Europäischen Erhaltungszuchtprogramm ist daraufhin in Narkose untersucht worden. Die Untersuchungen brachten jedoch keinen klaren Befund zur Ursache.
About four weeks ago, Kap began to show signs of ill health. The animal’s general condition became increasingly critical. The 24-year-old, the oldest male polar bear in the European conservation breeding programme, was then examined under anaesthesia. However, the examinations did not reveal any clear findings as to the cause.
Solange Kap im Innenbereich ist, nutzt das Tierpflege-Team und die Abteilung Bau und Technik die Zeit, um einige Veränderungen auf dem großen Teil der Anlage umzusetzen. In den kommenden Wochen könnten dann das Duo Nuka und MiKa sich mit Kap auf den Anlagenteilen abwechseln. Zusammengelassen werden kann ein Jungtier mit einem ausgewachsenen Männchen nicht, da der Nachwuchs getötet werden könnte. Auch in der Natur ist das Aufeinandertreffen von Jungtieren und Männchen lebensgfährlich.
While Kap is indoors, the animal care team and the construction and engineering department are using the time to make some changes to the large part of the enclosure. In the coming weeks, the duo Nuka and MiKa could then take turns with Kap on the enclosure sections. A young animal cannot be put together with a fully grown male, as the offspring could be killed. Even in nature, encounters between young animals and males are life-threatening.

Papabär Kap 🐻❄️ ist immer noch geschwächt. Er ruht und schläft viel. Ich hoffe weiterhin das der süßen Kapi Bär bald wieder ganz fit und gesund ist 🍀🍀🍀.

Karlsruhe Zoo – 09.06.2025
Dear All, I do not know whose sweet dreams/sorrows/wishes/whatever I am now damaging. But according to me, the major problem with Kap is that the Zoo is realizing that they have no spare space for him. I do not believe a single word of his so-called illness. He is at this moment just a bit too much. When they want to show Nuka and Mika to the visitors, they need the space of Kap. And what then with Kap???? Very convenient that he is now “very sick”. The moor has done his job, the moor can go now.
Patricia, your judgement is very harsh, although we know the problems in zoos with offspring and the lack of space for bear fathers, who then have to be kept behind the scenes or sent on ‘trips’. However, in Munich with Joghi and Giovanna’s cubs there was a second larger enclosure!
Nevertheless, I think that the concerns about Kap are justified, because the photos of Rebekka clearly show a very tired and obviously weakened bear. And I don’t believe that the zoo is using his illness as an alibi.
Patricia, dein Urteil ist sehr hart, obwohl wir die Problematik in den Zoos mit Nachzuchten kennen und dem mangelnden Platz für Bärenväter, die dann hinter den Kulissen gehalten werden müssen oder auf “Reisen” geschickt werden. Doch, in München mit Joghi und Giovannas Jungtieren gab ein es zweites größeres Gehege!
Dennoch denke ich, dass die Sorgen um Kap berechtigt sind, denn die Fotos von Rebekka zeigen eindeutig einen sehr müden und offensichtlich geschwächten Bären. Und dass der Zoo seine Krankheit als Alibi benutzt, glaube ich nicht.

I am afraid you are wrong. Our keepers and zoo management are not monsters to declare a healthy polar bear sick. There is not much room for 3 polar bears in Karlsruhe Zoo, but it is possible to let Kap and the duo Nuka and MiKa alternate in the enclosure. Other zoos also do this. There is also the possibility of relocating Kap to Hamburg. If you search, you will also find the other possibilities. I believe that Kap is really ill.

Dear Mervi!
Thank you for the update on Kap. Unfortunately, there is cause for worry again. Kap had recovered well in Karlsruhe after his time in Hamburg and I had hoped that he had now found his ‘forever home’. I didn’t realise that there wasn’t an adequate extra area for him there. It pains me that he has now fallen ill again. I really hope he makes a full recovery and that a good solution is found for him. The male polar bears are really screwed if they are used for breeding.
I keep my fingers crossed for him.

Die Fotos von Rebecca zeigen meines Erachtens, dass Kap müde und ohne Antrieb ist. Er kommt mir auch dünner vor. Ob ihm die Nähe von Nuka und Mika Probleme bereitet, ich vermute es…
Ich frage mich welche Medikamente er bekommt, wenn kein tierärztlicher Befund vorliegt… Und ob die geplanten Umbaumaßnahmen ihm nun die erhoffte Ruhe im Innenbereich bringen, ist ebenfalls fraglich…
Da Kap sich nach der Rückkehr aus Hamburg gut im Karlsruher Zoo erholt hat, hoffe ich weiterhin, dass sich die Tierärzte und seine Tierpfleger gut um ihn kümmern werden und dass er wieder “auf die Beine kommt” und gesund wird…🐻❄️✊💝
