The Novosibirsk Zoo makes an official announcement that a polar bear cub was born on December 7 2025.
Friends, we have wonderful news. The polar bear Gerda has given birth to a cub. The little one was born on December 7, 2025. Polar bear cubs are born blind and helpless. A newborn cub weighs an average of 600 grams. Next to its mother, it is barely noticeable.
And during the first months of life, the mother never leaves her little one alone for a second. Our Gerda behaved exactly this way with all her cubs.
This time, she went out for food for the first time on February 26. In other words, the mother bear had not left the den for more than two months. And the best thing we could do for her and the cub was to leave them undisturbed during this most wonderful and crucial period. That is why we are announcing the cub’s birth right now—when he has grown a little and is beginning to go out for walks.
The cub’s gender has not yet been determined. This will be done later, during the first veterinary examination. Zoologists and veterinarians are monitoring Gerda and the cub using cameras installed inside the enclosure complex. The specialists can see that the cub is eating well, growing, and developing appropriately for its age.
Polar bears Kai and Gerda became parents for the first time in 2013. The cub, who is now taking his first steps into the big world, is their seventh offspring.
Please note: access to Gerda and the cub’s enclosure will remain closed for some time to avoid disturbing the family during this important adaptation period.

Ja, so niedlich das Eisbärbaby auch ist, hätte ich mir gewünscht, dass “die Produktion von Nachwuchs” für Kai und Gerda erstmal ein Ende gehabt hätte!! Denn auch mir stellt sich die Frage: “Wohin mit dem Nachwuchs???” 🐻❄️🤔😞
Ich stimme Euch zu: so niedlich kleine Eisbären sind und so willkommen jedes Jungtier, sie sollen auch später, wenn sie groß sind, noch ein gutes Leben haben und gesund und glücklich leben. Gerda hätte sowieso schon lang eine Pause verdient!
