Sad news from Vienna – polar bear Nora has left us

Our nine-year-old polar bear suffered acute colic last week, which had to be treated surgically. The bear was then closely monitored by vets, keepers and curators. Despite the tireless efforts of the entire team and the caring care of the animal, her condition deteriorated massively in the following days. Eventually, vets and experts had to decide to euthanise her as there was no longer a chance of recovery.

In 2019, the polar bear had provided for female offspring. The cub is now fully grown and had to be separated from its mother several months ago. The young female bear Finja and her father Ranzo are well, healthy and can be seen at the polar bear enclosure.

Nora was born on the 24st of November 2013 in Tallinn, Estonia. Her parents: Friida and Nord.

My deepest condolences to the keepers and vets in Vienna and also to Evi in Tallinn who really loved beautiful Nora.

  1. Dear Mervi!
This is very sad new. It is a pity that so young polar bear passed away.
We saw Ranzo and Nora in May 2015 and in May 2018.
    Hugs
    Ludmila

  2. My thoughts especially go to Evi in Tallin.
Nora was her “Baby” and we enjoyed so many
wonderful reports from Tallin and later
from Vienna. What a pity, that this
    beautiful polarbear-girl had to die
so early, its a very sad day… 🙁

  3. Dear Mervi!
    What a sad day!
It’s terrible that this beautiful young bear could not be helped and had to die! She was much loved and admired. Evi from Tallinn even travelled halfway across Europe to visit her and gave her loving gifts each time. She made Nora happy and gave her beautiful and playful hours. Perhaps this is a small consolation after days of great sadness.

There is also sad news from Berlin Zoo. I learned today that Djasinga, the 19-year-old female orangutan and mother of the unforgotten little Rieke, was released from her suffering on Friday due to an incurable lung disease.

Both deaths came suddenly and unexpectedly for me.

    Deeply saddened
    Anke

Glg Erika

  5. Dear Mervi and Evi
It is always a tragedy when a young mother dies.
Nora had done such a good job of raising Finja.

  6. I am so sorry. May Nora rest in peace. We will never forget her. We will always love her. We love you Nora. You will always be in our hearts. We are all very sad.
