Wolodja & Co in Rotterdam

20.7.2023 – Photos by Nel Hoekstra, Rotterdam Zoo

When Nel visited the Rotterdam Zoo she found Wolodja looking like a Loch Ness monster. She suspected Wolli was rehearsing for a theatre play about the famous creature in Scotland. 🙂

Oh bear, how can I take off this ‘costume’?

I try to shake it off ….

… well, I look gorgeous even with the face decoration! 🙂

Lady Karuna had a feathered fan.

The magpie certainly has a nerve to bother this nice lady! Although Karuna doesn’t seem to mind. 🙂

Info from the Rotterdam Zoo: Take a look from the Savannah Bridge into the hyena’s nest; you will see two dark brown pups. About two months ago Kaidi gave birth; the sexes are still unknown. It is not uncommon for hyenas to have twins. They are currently doing well, but the cubs are very fierce towards each other. At birth, they already have razor-sharp teeth and the strongest cub is in charge.

The pups stay in the den and sometimes walk a very short distance behind their mother. Father Karoi does not interfere in their upbringing and stays at an appropriate distance. When will you come for a maternity visit?

  2. Dear Nel and dear Mervi!
Even Aika, the legendary female polar bear from the Berlin Tierpark, knew that algae make you beautiful – she ate them… Wolodja might know another secret of this water plant for a beautiful fur?
But I suppose the heat has made the algae grow so much that the bears can’t swim without coming into contact with it. Anyway, I’m glad to see that Wolodja is doing well, at least he looks that way.

Hyenas are not my favourite animals, but they have an important function in their habitat as hunters and scavengers for the biological balance and are a kind of health police.
Their little ones are cute and touching like most animal babies.
    Thanks for showing!

    Hugs
    Anke
PS: Mirjam, Danke fĂŒr diese beruhigende Information!

  3. Dear Neal,
    Dear Mervi,

It’s good to hear from Volodya again.
His masquerade as a monster is very successful.
With the algae growth, many waters are afflicted by the heat.

The little hyena babies are of course pretty, although I don’t particularly like the adults either. Jörg GrĂ€ser at Leibzig Zoo, on the other hand, loves his very much. Unfortunately, he has been moved to another animal area, which is very surprising for such an accomplished keeper. But Leibzig Zoo has shot down all protests from zoo visitors and its fans…..

I am glad that Volodya is doing well in Rotterdam.

    Many thanks and best wishes!

  4. Dear Nel and dear Mervi

Wolodja also looks good disguised as a monster. I enjoyed seeing him.
    The hyena’s twins are enchanting.

    Thank you.
    Have a nice weekend!
    Hugs,
    Anita
