The new year is rolling on even in the Dierenrijk Nuenen. Most animals are taking things ‘Winter easy’ and look very relaxed.
I know I should be hibernating but I’m not so tired. OK, I’m a bit tired but mind you – I don’t feel sleepy!
Hmm, are the visitors hibernating …. I’m waiting for them!
Oh bear, it started snowing!
Maybe I should consider that hibernating thing anyway …. On second thought, it’s so wonderful to see snow so I have no time for long sleeps.
The lynx couple are discussion the weather ….
…. that turned out to be very snowy!
This colourful trio is admiring the snow flakes through a window.
The lion brothers don’t look too happy ….
…. but they have fearless lion hearts so they stayed outside!
Sibu seems to like the snowy landscape, too.
Dierenrijk Nuenen: The baby polar bear is doing fine.
In the nursery, the young animal grows up safe and warm until it is big enough to go outside. It is the same in nature. Mother and cub spend the first months together in a snow cave.
By now, the cub is expected to weigh almost 3.5 kg. At birth, young polar bears weigh about 600 grams. A considerable growth in a short time! When the cub weighs about 10 kg, it will explore the outside world. It is then big and strong enough.
Would you still like to catch a glimpse of the cub? At Dierenrijk you can follow the first steps of the newborn polar bear via a live connection with the nursery.
Wilbär is doing fine, too. The photos were taken before the snow came.
Maybe he misses the Winter he was used to in Orsa but now it’s been snowing so I guess our white giant is happy.

ich möchte Sie fragen, ob Sie wissen, was mit den vielen restlichen Raubtieren in Orsa Grönklit geschehen ist. Diese sollten doch eingeschläfert werden, wenn sie nicht in anderen Zoos untergebracht werden können. Ich habe die mir bekannten Zoos in Deutschland angeschrieben und gefragt, ob sie nicht wenigstens ein Tier übernehmen könnten. Aber leider habe ich keine Antwort erhalten.

Hallo Frau Plümke,
im Frühjahr 2023 habe ich, die Eisbären von Orsa betreffend, viele Zoos in ähnlicher Mission angeschrieben und nur zwei Antworten bekommen. In beiden wurde mir versichert, dass alle Tiere vermittelt werden und kein Tier eingeschläfert werden wird.
Nun, die fünf Eisbären aus Orsa haben in England gute Plätze gefunden, auch die Braunbären sind in andere Zoos vermittelt worden.
Ich vertraue den beiden Aussagen, die ich aus zuverlässiger Quelle bekommen habe und hoffe sehr, dass wirklich alle Tiere ein anderes Zuhause bekommen werden!!!

Tiere aus Orsa sind in zwei anderen Zoos in Schweden, in Finnland, Belgien, Ungarn und den Niederlanden untergebracht. Die drei Braunbären in Berlin stammen aus Orsa. Vielleicht hat Ihr Brief geholfen! Die Eisbären leben jetzt in England. Soviel ich weiß, wurden keine Tiere eingeschläfert. – Ich danke Ihnen für Ihr Engagement! Aber es ist eine große Schande für Schweden, diesen wunderbaren Park in Orsa zu schließen.
Animals from Orsa are placed in two other zoos in Sweden, in Finland, Belgium, Hungary, Netherlands. The three brown bears in Berlin came from Orsa. Maybe your letter helped! The polar bears are now living in England. As far as I know no animals were put to sleep. – Thank you for your engagement! However, it’s a big shame for Sweden to close that wonderful park in Orsa.

Ob die Löwen sich allerdings im Schnee wirklich wohl fühlen, darf vermutlich leicht bezweifelt werden; dennoch geben sie ein gutes Bild ab, so zusammengerückt . . .

Thank you for the great pictures! I really liked the bear in the drifting snow! The lions didn’t seem to be so pleased about the white splendour… I hope they didn’t catch a cold!
On the Dierenrijk Nuenen website I also discovered moving pictures of the newborn polar bear cub. It is always touching to see how small and fragile these mighty animals are at the beginning of their lives.

I always find it marvellous when animals watch the snowflakes with fascination.
I, however, would rather be in hibernation right now.

Es ist schön, dass es dem Nachwuchs gut geht, im Frühjahr wird das Eisbärbaby bestimmt auf der Anlage zu sehen sein…
