Sisu’s Winter letter

9.2.2026 – Photos by Pat Waldron

Terve! Hello! It’s your friend Sisu calling with some Winter news.

sisu7

It’s the breeding season again and this time of the year makes us all feel uneasy and even a bit aggressive. We are not angry but the evil hormones cause lots of problems. However, so far I’m doing quite well.

sisu6

We’ve had a few real cold Winter days and even some snow that has now melted away. Maybe February will bring snow again ….

sisu1

I feel a bit tired.

sisu3

It’s only February but I wonder if I feel Spring tiredness already ….

sisu2

This time I have the great pleasure to show you some photos of Brodie.

brodie1

He’s Hamish’ little brother – well, not so little anymore.

brodie2

He will not stay here permanently. He will move back to Scotland when the works with the polar bears’s enclosure are finished.

Brodie and Nobby have become good friends.

In case you missed it, we’ve got a new baby on board! 🥹 This little chap was born on the 27th December to experienced mum, Ruby 💖 Ruby is doing an incredible job at rearing her calf 🐾 Okapi births are incredibly rare, making this little one extra special ✨

Okapi baby by Yorkshire

The adorable okapi calf born to mum Ruby and dad Stomp has officially been named Neo 💙 Neo means “gift” in Setswana, symbolising new beginnings, and it also has Greek roots meaning “new.” While Setswana is spoken in southern Africa, the name beautifully reflects hope and renewal for this Central African forest species.

Visitors may be lucky enough to spot Ruby and Neo through the window of our Okapi House, located between Land of the Tiger and the Kirk’s dik-diks 🐾 Keep an eye out for this very special little newcomer on your next visit!

I pinched the text above from the Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s website. I hope I’m excused!

Brodie is younger than I am but even a young bear needs some rest now and then.

Brodie knows that a good nap is just like putting money in your piggy bank! 🙂

That’s all for now but I’ll be back!

  1. Lieber Sisu,

  2. Dear Sisu and Mervi!
Thank you for the interesting news. The Spring is no more far away. I can understand that the bears are tired. Broadie is a huge young bear. Good that he and Nobby are friends.
    Ruby is cute.
    Hugs
    Ludmila

  3. Dear Mervi and Pat!
Thank you for sharing Sisu’s perspective with us once again! He is so dirty that one could almost think he is particularly happy… I also wish him and the other polar bears in Yorkshire lots of snow again! I hope that all the bears survive the hormonal emotional storms well and unharmed!
Hamish’s little brother Brodie is a handsome lad, has a pretty smile, and seems to be quite content.
The mini okapi is adorable and a real treasure. Congratulations to YWP!

    Hugs
    Anke

  4. TERVE! dear SISU …. You seem to be a happy bear (speaking of your oufit / remember: dirty bears are HAPPY BEARS!);
however, you seem to be concerned about your hormons that may play you games soon already.

Don’t you worry, your best friend/virtual mother MERVI who has alwqys a loving sight on you all the time
will see that things won’t turn out too hard. …… Have a good time before, while and after 🙂
AND: don’t forget to wear a ‘grey’ (some would rather say ‘dirty’) suit from time to time 😉

  5. Dear Mervi
Thanks for the entertaining letter you put into SISU’s mouth as an interesting report that shows so well his kind of seeing things – accompanied by great photographs.
