Old and young inhabitants in the Yorkshire Wildlife Park

29.4.2026 by Pat Waldron

The readers of this Magazine already know the seven polar bears and the lion clans in the Yorkshire Wildlife Park but there are many other sweet animals in this park. Let me introduce some of them to you.

50-year-old Gale, who is the one of the oldest known Lar Gibbons in the international studbook, 18-year-old Manis, and 10-year-old Koopa are all being rehomed from South Lakes Safari Zoo in Cumbria, which closed in 2025.

Altai, the 4 year old Amur tiger was born at the Norwegian Zoo, Dyreparken and arrived in Yorkshire on the 27th February 2025.

Altai seems to be a nature lover and likes to hug a tree. 🙂

The young male tiger travelled over 1135 miles from Norway to join YWP’s resident tigress Tschuna who arrived at the park in 2013.

It was lovely to see the two new Capybara boys ‘Chip & Dale’ out for the first time yesterday (13th of April). A keeper informed me that they joined us recently from the Netherlands and are 10 months old.

Chip is the slightly larger one of the two, while Dale’s head looks a little more ‘rusty’ looking.
