Christmas in July! – Part 1

18.7.2023 by Michelle Rippey

The keepers in the Milwaukee County Zoo have arranged a nice Christmas party for their bears in July! What a great idea! You can see how Boris enjoyed this special day.

Here comes, Boris! Of course, the penguin caught his attention first.

Next he’s heading for his platform. Did Santa leave you a present?

boris2

“See, I got a present from Santa!”

boris3

“Oh, this fresh browse is so tasty!” Yum…..yum

boris4

“OMG! This is simply the best! Well done, Santa’s helpers!”

boris5

“Oh, I love hidden snackies!”

boris6

Time to investigate other gifts…..

boris7

Oh, oh….penguin isn’t going to survive. Give it compressions, Boris! Bring penguin back to life!

boris8

“Oh look…..the elves even hung a stocking! How did they get up there? Elves can fly?”

boris9

Boris was busy for a bit. YUM!

boris10

“Ahhh, people sure love it when I relax like this!” “Now I’ll show them how I can hydrate by sucking the water from my big paw!”

boris11

I see that smile, Boris! Guests commented on his beautiful smile as he was enjoying his “Christmas in July”

boris12

Oh, Boris

boris13

“Give my compliments to the little elves! They are simply the best!”

boris14

“Found it! My present was under the browse.”

boris15

FISH! Yummy!

boris16

“NO, I am NOT a grizzly! I’m an Alaskan brown bear!”

boris17

“This is exhausting!”

boris18

“Time for my nappy! Tell my peeps…..THANK YOU!”

  1. It looks like Boris had a lot of fun at his Christmas party. The keepers are so creative. This kind of enrichment is so good for the bears.

Thanks for the cute and amusing photos.

  2. Mervi, the Christmas surprise is very funny. The bear liked it too – Christmas presents in the middle of summer, great!

  3. Dear Michelle and Mervi!
The reason for giving out Christmas presents in July is not clear to me. But Boris was happy and could do something with the gifts – and that is the main thing.
He seems to be a very charming and relaxed bear.
    Thank you for sharing!

    Hugs
    Anke

  4. Dear Michelle

  5. This was a very nice idea to surprise the ‘Browny’ with a Christmas-like day in July2023!

Thanks for having us given the chance to share this special event for BORIS the Browny. . . . Good there is again a new reporter for Mervi and KM. . . . You have brought fine pics from the Milwaukee Zoo, dear Mrs Michelle Rippey, and it seems the captions are from you as well(!?).

The story and all pics are great but I love especially those ones:

““Now I’ll show them how I can hydrate by sucking the water from my big paw!” + “FISH! Yummy!” + “NO, I am NOT a grizzly! I’m an Alaskan brown bear!” (I automatically think of all the parents and other adults that give wrong lessons to (their) chidren while observing animals in the Zoos (I guess it’s the same all over the world – In Berlin it is/was often like this (!?) + “This is exhausting” + ““Time for my nappy! Tell my peeps
..THANK YOU!”” :-))))
