A Few Hours with Nobby & Co – Part 1

27.7.2023 by Pat Waldron

Nobby makes his ‘undignified’ entry into the water for his early morning dip and soon finds something of interest to play with……a tyre!

pat1

After about 20 minutes Nobby has managed to move it to the edge of the water and, (after a tight squeeze) successfully go through the middle.

Another interesting thing – I wonder what it is ….

The keepers then move Nobby, Indie & Yuma into the opposite enclosure where Nobby soon finds another ‘toy’ to play with …..a white container! He then carries it to the top of the bank and tosses it into the water, he then dives in after it. (Sorry …. I missed the dive!)

pat7

He then plays happily with it for 15 minutes or more before being joined by Indie who decides he wants to muscle in and play with it!

I know you love my face so I try to look straight at the camera.

pat13

Can you talk – or at least growl?

pat14

Maybe he speaks a foreign very silent language that I can’t understand ….

pat54

This barrel is a good friend anyway!

pat55

pat56

I keep it gently on my paws.

pat58

Do you think it’s OK to kiss a barrel ….

pat59

…. well, I don’t care what bears say. I love my barrel!

In the next part you will see Nobby and Indie playing together.

  1. Dear Pat and Mervi!
I love watching polar bears getting busy and playing with an object of their choice. It’s especially nice when they discover the many possibilities of a pipe, a canister or a tyre. The polar bears at YWP are well on their way and I am happy about that. I especially liked Nobby with the canister. Thanks for the great pictures and captions!
Some bears acquire considerable skills after a while. I’m reminded of Vilma, who loved to throw canisters, Knut, who was a master at throwing balls or lettuce, who could carry something under his arm and at the same time catch a fish thrown to him with his mouth, and who could transport several objects from A to B at once. Unforgettable!

    Hugs
    Anke

  2. These are great photos that show how well the bear gang is doing in Doncaster.
Polar bears are tireless at play and, as you can see, successful divers and treasure hunters.

Dear Pat, Thank you for your report!

  3. Ins Spiel vertieft, vielen Dank für die tollen Fotos und den schönen Bericht dazu!!!🐻‍❄️😊🤗

  4. Dear Pat

I am happy to see Nobby in such a good mood and playing happily with the white barrel.
I know it well. How often have I missed a bearish take-off 😆
Thank you so much for the pictures of the water fun from the YWP.

    Hugs,
    Anita

Many thanks to you too, dear Mervi!

  5. Dear Pat and Mervi YWP sometimes looks like a second hand market for old canoes and barrels but there is no doubt that the Polar Bears enjoy being occupied. Nobby at the moment is the best match for Indy and Yuma while Hamish and Luka have found a reasonable way of getting along. Poor old Sisu has come off worse in the competition for Indy as best mate. Nobby like his mum Giovanna can be pretty determined.
