Mervi: Jens has visited almost every zoo in Europe and has excellent articles of the visits in his blog. There’s also a lot of valuable information of polar bears in different zoos. This time I want to present a list of the polar bears in German zoos for the time being.
The information is without guarantee – comments and corrections are welcome.
We know now that Kap has moved from Hagenbeck to Karlsruhe after becoming a father to a baby bear. The baby (still nameless) lives in Hagenbeck with mother Victoria.
At that time (30.6.2023), there are 28 polar bears living in 10 zoos. In addition, there is a so-called hybrid bear at Osnabrück Zoo.
I start roughly from north to south. This is not meant to be an assessment!

Danke für diese hilfreiche Übersicht, die man immer mal wieder zur Hand nehmen kann, wenn einem der Überblick verloren gegangen ist. Ich z.B. komme inzwischen häufiger durcheinander, weil ich die einzelnen Bären und Namen den jeweiligen Zoos nicht mehr zuordnen kann…

das ist eine tolle Übersicht, denn auch ich habe oftmals Probleme mit der Zuordnung der Bären und nun sieht man auch auf Anhieb ihr Alter.

Dear Jens and Mervi Thank you for this excellent Baedeker to the Polar Bears of Germany. It is sad that Wuppertal and Zoo Berlin have stopped looking after Polars. It is even sadder that Germany has not followed other countries in using old bits of land and water to set up Polar Bear parks. However, Germany has produced some fine Polar Bears and their zoos are some of the best in the world.
