The polar bear twins born at Rostock Zoo on 14 November are girls. Now names are being sought for the polar bear offspring.
“In the meantime, the first short examination of the polar bear twins took place,” Zoo Director Antje Angeli informed. “Two keepers weighed the cubs and looked to see what sex they were. The check-up in the box only took about four minutes and should remain the only one if possible.”
Upon examination, both cubs were found to be females. The visible difference in size on the camera images from the natal den was also confirmed by the scales. The smaller female weighed 7.8 kg, the larger one already 9.2 kg. “Both cubs are fit and apparently healthy. They are already running into the neighbouring boxes and are becoming more playful. Both are well nourished and show normal development.”
What should the successors of Fiete (2014), be called? “We are collecting all the suggestions we receive until 9 February,” the zoo director promised. The Polarium team will select four names from the ideas and put them to a public vote. The naming will then take place during the first outing to the outdoor area with Mama Sizzel in March.”
All zoo lovers can submit their favourites by email (presse@zoo-rostock.de), by post (Rennbahnallee 21, 18059 Rostock) or via social media channels until the 9th of February.
