The Prague Zoo – Tom is moving

6.2.2024 – Photos by Martina Ho

On the 3rd of February Martina visited polar bear Tom for the last time before his move to the Almaty Zoo in Kazakhstan.

It’s a pity Tom has to leave the home where he’s doing so fine.

Tom took a chance for a maybe last swim in his pool

I believe he instinctively knows something is going to happen soon.

Just like many others I don’t understand why he has to move!

Aleut and Gregor from Warzaw will come to Prague. These guys had a good life in Warsaw so why the move?? – Photo by the Warsaw Zoo

Bye bye Prague and my keepers & visitors! I hope you can follow my life even in the Almaty Zoo!

  1. Dear Mervi,

Yes, these shifts after many years in the same zoo are difficult to understand and unfortunately the reasons are never explained. At least Gregor and Aleut are staying together.

Tom is a beautiful bear, I hope he is doing well in his new home.

I always worry that we won’t find out anything more about them.

    Good bye Tom!

  2. Alle guten Wünsche für EisbärTom, aber auch für Aleut und Gregor!!🐻‍❄️🐻‍❄️🐻‍❄️💝
Warum auch immer das Eisbären-Karussell sich für diese drei Bären dreht…🤔

  3. Dear Mervi!
    I’m sorry for Tom.
I sometimes don’t understand the point of these moves either. The lack of transparency in zoos also bothers me when plans for iconic zoo animals and public favourites have changed, animals are suddenly gone and you often don’t even have the chance to say goodbye, which was probably not the case here. In the case of offspring and young animals, I can understand that animals have to be given away, but animals that have been at home in a zoo for many years should not be deported!
I hope that Tom will also have a good life in Kazakhstan and that he will be loved and well looked after there.

    Hugs
    Anke

  4. Dear Mervi!
I am sad for Tom. We would not get the information about his life. Almaty is far away.
I hope Aleut and Gregor will be happy in the zoo Prag. The enclosure in the zoo Warschau was not nice.
    Hugs
    Ludmila

  5. The picture under “Just like many others I don’t understand why he has to move!” shows a polar bear that seem to be completely self-engrossed and relaxed – as do the photos before and after.

He gives an image of a wise bear. And he is beautiful!

I wish him that he don’t has to suffer under the move and the loss of his familiar suroundings. Best luck to him and to all the other bears who ‘unvorgewarnt in eines der unerklärlichen Eisbären-Umzugs-Karussells gesetzt werden’.

Danke für die Information und die schönen Begleit-Bilder.

  6. Dear Mervi

There are decisions that i understand. But i don’t understand this decision.
If an animal feels comfortable at there home and everything is going well, why does it have to move? I don´t no.
    Good luck to Tom.

Also for Gregor and Aleut, who now have to leave Warschau after so many years. For whatever reason.

    Thank you for this info.

    Hugs,
    Anita
