Lycksele Zoo is Sweden’s northernmost Zoo and specializes in Nordic animals. Lycksele Zoo was founded in 1959 by Holger Lithner. It started with a small collection of animals at Gammplatsen. The zoo moved to Brännberget in 1966, where it has developed into Norrland’s largest tourist facility. The zoo is run by Lycksele municipality.

The brown bear is, of course, the king of the zoo – and he knows it!

Male moose are also claiming they’re the kings of the northern woods so maybe this lady moose is a queen …. 🙂

The mission of this park – Together for a sustainable future

More and more animal species in the world today are threatened with extinction and the list of species at risk of extinction is getting longer and longer. The conservation of endangered species is now a common task for the world’s zoos. Our aim is to increase understanding of the irreplaceable value of nature and biodiversity. Through research, we learn more about the animals and this gives us greater opportunities in our work to preserve endangered animals.

Our three main missions as a zoo are: conservation, education and research.

This wolf represents this species of predators in the Swedish nature.

When Krister visited the park there were sweet wolf puppies.

These two are old enough to eat solid food.

A young musk ox in a wonderful enclosure. Well, this enclosure is rather a forest!

Maybe these impressive individs are the parents?

What would a forest be without a forest reindeer?

lycksele9

All the animals in this park have very spacious enclosures – or rather forests. This cute red fox have lots of places for sun bathing but there are also many shady spots for hot Summer days.

Although there’s still lots of snow in Lycksele there are even signs of the Spring to be seen. The otter looks a bit confused …. 🙂

All animals in Lycksele Animal Park

When I saw the video of this park in Winter dress I couldn’t help thinking what a fantastic place this would be for polar bears. The white giants are not ‘members of the Swedish fauna’ but they sure would be perfect for this kind of park. Unfortunately building a polar bear enclosure is very expensive so rich sponsors are needed! Maybe this is a dream that will come true one day. It’s a shame that after the closing down of Orsa there will be no polar bears in Sweden.

  1. Dear Mervi!
This seems to be the kind of animal park you would wish for. All the animal inhabitants look well and happy. It’s great to see the whole range of Scandinavian fauna. I was especially pleased to see the photos of the little wolves and the bear, but all the others are worth every attention too.
It would be great if there were polar bears in a zoo or animal park in Sweden again, and maybe one or two millionaires will see it the same way? This zoo probably wouldn’t be the worst home for them…. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

    Hugs
    Anke

  3. Ich habe noch nie von diesem Wildpark gehört,
aber es macht alles einen sehr guten Eindruck.
Wahrscheinlich herrscht dort noch Winter, aber
im Mittsommer ist es sicher schön dort… 😀

  4. Dear Mervi
