30.5.2023 – Photos by Rebecca Roth
When I’m writing this Charlotte is the only polar bear in the Karlsruhe Zoo now that Lloyd has moved to Budapest.
She enjoys lying on the green grass and letting the sun rays warm her.
Sometimes the warm weather makes her very sleepy.
Well, the naps don’t last very long because Lottchen is an active polar bear lady.
What a nice fluffy fur she has – and so WHITE!!
Of course, the Summer season is also a bathing season.
I don’t know what this big thing is but Lottchen sure likes it.
Is it a big barrel ….
Oh, she found another toy, too.
The splashing water is so refreshing!
The keepers are spoiling the beautiful lady and she got the snacks served in the ‘pool’. It looks like she has a secret feathered admirer …. 🙂
Mmmmm, this is so yammy!
I don’t know if Charlotte knows that Lloyd has left but maybe she’s wondering why she can’t smell him anymore.
Rebecca took these photos on the 5th of May before Lloyd left the zoo – her last photos of him in the Karlsruhe Zoo.
I’m sure we all wish Lloyd best of luck in Budapest and hope he will feel better there than Fiete did!

Charlotte sieht sehr gut aus !
Ihr ist es wahrscheinlich egal,
denn die Beiden waren ohnehin
getrennt. Für Lloyd tut es mir
sehr leid: das Ganze ist so
sinnlos… nun wird er auf
dieser furchtbaren Stein-
Anlage in Budapest sitzen.
Grauenvolle Vorstellung…
Hi Rebecca,
Charlotte looks great and I am always amazed that the fur of the individual polar bears is so different in thickness (fluffy). Sometimes it’s thin and sparse, or even almost bald, and then again it’s such a magnificent coat. In the end, the animals are all kept under the same conditions in terms of food and environment with bathing facilities.
Charlotte is doing well and that makes me happy. I also wish for Lloyd that he is doing better than Fiete, although I don’t understand why he was sent there at all after the disaster with Fiete. But as Chris already said, with the polar bear breeding programme, no one understands the decisions of those “responsible” anymore.
Thank you, dear Rebecca, for the great photos!
Dear Rebecca!
Thank you for this update from the Karlsruhe Zoo!
I fully agree with my pre-writers: Charlotte looks great and has a very nice, fluffy coat; I hope that Lloyd will get through the time in Budapest unscathed and I also don’t understand why he was sent there after the story with Fiete.
In any case, these are pleasing photos of Charlotte bathing and I’m certainly glad she’s healthy and happy and enjoying life.
Now I only wish that Kap moves to Karlsruhe as soon as possible and is freed from his currently unacceptable situation in the Hagenbeck Zoo!
Hugs
Anke
