After four Polar Bear packed days in Denmark I arrived in Bremerhaven to meet another mother with two daughters.
Small but fine the Zoo by the sea reproduces (like Aalborg) the sort of terrain you find on Svalbard, Glimpses of the busy seascape behind also interest the bears.
The habitat has been carefully designed to give the bears an interesting and varied place to live.
Valeska and her two princesses, Anna and Elsa, are in this photograph. Look carefully and you will see mum at the front and the girls in front of the wall behind her.
There are two distinct enclosures within the habitat separated by a door and grill. If Valeska gets fed up with her girls, they can live separately as Lloyd, their father, used to do. But so far they are very relaxed.
Anna and Elsa have grown into fine looking Polars but still sometimes stick together like cubs.
Here they take a look at the port beyond the walls.
It is now very hard to tell who is who in the photos.
Two viewing windows near the entrance allow you to get really close to the bears. I think this is Valeska but all three are the same size now so it could be Anna or Elsa.
As in the Arctic two Polar Foxes live near the bears (their enclosure is of course separate). The white fur one and grey on the other reflected the fact that September was very warm.
All the animals in the Zoo are given plenty to occupy them.
My day in Bremerhaven went very quickly. It is a friendly and really successful little zoo.
Dear Ralph!
Bremerhaven sure has a wonderful zoo. It’s great the polar bears can live so near the sea – and even see it!
Valeska, Anna and Elsa are all looking beautiful and healthy. The arctic foxes have a nice enclosure near the polars so the visitors can have a real ‘arctic feeling’ watching all these lovelies. 🙂
I think this zoo would be suitable for a visitor with bad back, too. Big zoos just are too much for an old chick like me. 🙂
Thank you for inviting us to visit Bremerhaven!
Hugs from Mervi
Dear Ralph
I really liked the zoo by the sea when I visited it a few years ago.
The girls are already as tall as their mom. I hope that the three of them can live together peacefully for a long time.
Thank you, dear Ralph, for your descriptions and your pictures and you, dear Mervi, for editing.
Hugs,
Anita
Dear Ralph!
You had a good time at the zoo by the sea, as can be seen from your sunny photos.
I like this zoo very much because of its unique location and the special design of the grounds, and not least because of its animals.
I wish Valeska and her daughters a happy future and hope they can live together for a while longer.
The pretty little arctic fox has given the ball the appearance of a pizza….
Hugs

Hallo Ralph
Die Mädels sehen super aus ! 🙂

Dear Ralph!
The zoo by the sea is not big, but it is always worth visiting. Valeska, Anna and Elsa look very good.

Dear Ralph,
Zoo am Meer really does have a special place among zoos because of its location and size, although I have to say here too that the polar bear enclosure has too many stones and rocks for me.
One can only hope that it won’t be affected by a storm surge one day, that would be a disaster.
Thank you for your report and best regards!
Britta-Gudrun
Thank you very much dear Ralph.
Best wishes to Valeska, Anna and Elsa.
