Andrew visited the polar bears in Toledo

23.08.2023 – Photos by Andrew King

Today I have a wonderful surprise for you. It’s not very often I can publish photos of the polar bears in the Toledo Zoo. However, Andrew visited the zoo on the 15th of August and gave me his permission to publish his photos even in this magazine.

Crystal, Kalluk and Kallu are doing fine. When Andrew arrived in the zoo the bears were finishing their lunch.

He could see some left overs on the ground.

Crystal was still crunchin a piece of lettuce …

… and even one of the twins had something green in his mouth.

After the ‘green hour’ it was time for walks in the enclosure.

Every stone had to be controlled to be sure they were in their right places. 🙂

Are you sure this stone was here yesterday?

Kalluk and Kallu have grown a lot but they are still small cubbies.

I don’t know who’s who but one thing’s for sure – they are both adorable!

  1. Dear Andrew,
    dear Mervi,

Thank you for the post and comments about the bears at Toledo Zoo.
The twins have been doing well, but they still need to grow a bit to push rocks away, ha ha.

    Best wishes
    Britta-Gudrun

  2. Dear Andrew!
It’s always heart-warming to watch little polar bears in action. As Britta-Gudrun has already said, they are still too small to be “stone pushers”, but the rocks can already be used for a trial of strength. And if they continue to eat their salad so well-behaved, they will surely develop very well and grow big and strong…
    Thanks for the cute pictures!

    Hugs
    Anke

    • Dear Andrew and Mervi
One of the advantages of stone and rocky enclosures is that you get clean Polars.
As the photos show the boulders also serve as enrichment.

  3. Dear Andrew

I had great pleasure in your pictures.
I too know the problem of walking around my garden and wondering if that stone was there yesterday too 🤣
The feed remains show healthy feed. So it’s no wonder that the bears are all alive and well.

Thank you for this enchanting report from Toledo.
    Hugs,
    Anita

  4. Thanks for the great photos, Andrew. The boys are certainly a wonder. Crystal does well to keep up with them.

We are so lucky we get to see these boys in person, and I am so glad you could share your fun day here.

    Molly
