My first visit in Peak Wildlife Park – Part 1

8.8.2023 by Pat Waldron

There are two Polar Bear enclosures at the Peak Wildlife Park covering a total of 5 acres. The bears were in the first enclosure , which has a large pool with a depth of 6 metres. (The second enclosure’s pool is 8 metres deep).

The Peak District is beautiful and I am sure they will be very happy there. The enclosures are not as big as YWP but are still a good size. Also, around the edges of the water both natural stone & concrete have been used to stop erosion. Not as natural but it won’t be as muddy in winter……and will help keep them clean!!??

…. and then with one of the cubs.

According to the keepers, they have all settled in very well. Nanook is a little more adventurous with Noori being a little closer to mum.

Nanook & Noori both looked completely at ease in their new surroundings and were extremely playful throughout the day.

Hope is perhaps taking a little longer, which I think is understandable, she was regularly patrolling the boundary and also checking on the whereabouts of the cubs.

She also spent time a good amount of time playing with the cubs in the water and later chilling out on the wood chips.

Hope is planning her next move ….

… and then she takes the lead. Don’t they look like a duck family – the kids following mama. 🙂

peak36

Nanook and Noori sure love their mama.

Is that a furred submarine or what?

It’s not easy to catch the whole family in one photo but this is a really nice pic!

peak45

Hope got enough of playing and stepped out of the water.

Nanook and Noori just loved playing with their toys, diving in the water, climbing out and diving in again…….very reminiscent of their Aunt Tala.

A peak performance! 🙂

That’s it for now but we’ll be back soon in the second part of Pat’s reports!

  2. Dear Pat,

these are beautiful photos, and my heart swells with joy that the three from Orsa have found such a good place, after we were so worried about the polar bears there due to the closure of Orsa Park! Of course, I hope for an equally ideal placement for Miki and Ewa.

Your comparison with the duck family is spot on, with the two swimming in their mum’s wake – images that you sometimes see in documentaries in the wild – heart-warming!

It’s a pity for you Ralph that you can’t travel there so well without a car, but I’m sure you will spare no expense and effort to visit the three from Orsa in the Peak Wildlife Park as soon as possible.

Thank you very much for your beautifully illustrated report and best regards
    Britta-Gudrun

PS. Mervi, I am sure that this edition also gave you great pleasure for your darlings from Orsa, didn’t it?

    Dear Pat,

    Britta-Gudrun

  3. Dear Pat and Mervi!
I am very happy and relieved that Hope and her children are so well accommodated after the move from Orsa. I also hope that there will be a similarly good solution for Ewa and Miki!
What I wish for those responsible for the closure of Orsa is not fit to print….
The photos are great and show impressively that all three are active and full of life and have coped well with the departure from their home and the move.
I am looking forward to the second part.

    Hugs
    Anke

    • Dear Pat and Mervi
Thank you for the chance to visit the Peak Park.
I do not think I will be able to visit it very often as the journey is quite complicated without a car.

  4. Dear Pat!

    Hugs

  5. Dear Pat
It is a great joy for me to see Hope and her kids in this wonderful facility.
They are doing well. I can tell from the great pictures.
Even though the enclosure is not as big as in YWP, I think it is a magnificent and great home for the beary family.
    Your photos are terrific again.

    Hugs,
    Anita
