Summer greetings from Thessaloniki

16.6.2023 by Leti

My home city Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece with slightly over one million inhabitants in its metropolitan area.

The city is renowned for its festivals, events and vibrant cultural life in general, and is considered to be Greece’s cultural capital.

Ano Poli (also called Old Town and literally the Upper Town) is the heritage listed district north of Thessaloniki’s city centre that was not engulfed by the great fire of 1917 and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site by ministerial actions of Melina Merkouri, during the 1980s. It consists of Thessaloniki’s most traditional part of the city, still featuring small stone paved streets, old squares and homes featuring old Greek and Ottoman architecture. It is the favourite area of Thessaloniki’s poets, intellectuals and bohemians.

The city was named after the princess Thessalonike of Macedon, the half sister of Alexander the Great, whose name means “Thessalian victory.

Because Thessaloniki is located by the sea there are, of course, lots of seagulls but in the city you can also see crowds of pidgeons.

  1. Dear Leti!

Thank you so much for the Summer greetings from your home city! I can almost feel the nice breeze from the sea. The sea gulls and the pidgeons are an essential part of the city.

I love the photo with Olympos in the background!

    Hugs from Mervi

  2. Lieber Leti

Thank you very much for the wonderful impressions of your home town.
Mount Olympus looks picturesque with its white cap.
The White Tower looks old and strong.
Seagulls belong to the sea, as do the waves. You have photographed pigeons with different plumage . I recognise that each pigeon is unique in its kind.

I wish your a pleasent Summer!

    Hugs,
    Anita

  3. The photo of Mount Olympus was taken in April, that is why there is snow but there is always some snow on Olympus. The photo of the seagulls was taken during a boat trip.

  4. Dear Leti
The different colours of your pigeons are
indeed fascinating. You live in a big City,
but fortunately there is always fresh air
from the sea. The snow in the mountains
    look so nice! 🙂
    Greetings
    Chris

  5. Dear Leti!
Your few pictures make one want to see more!
It must be nice to live in a Mediterranean city by the sea. Olympus, the seat of the gods, is certainly a magical mountain.
You obviously like pigeons. Each one of them is an individual and looks different.
In our area there are many wood pigeons, which are protected. Although pigeons are considered gentle birds of peace, sometimes they are not very friendly to each other, especially when it comes to food.
Thank you for these impressions of your hometown.

    Hugs
    Anke

  6. Dear Leti,

Thank you for your beautiful report and the great photos of Tessaloniki, of which I particularly like Olympus.

The link about the history of your hometown is very interesting and worth reading, and everyone probably associates Melina Merkouri with Greece.

As in all cities by the sea, seagulls are of course a fixture, but so are pigeons and although they are a symbol of peace, they are not always and everywhere popular.

    Kind regards!
    Britta-Gudrun

  7. Dear Leti!

    Hugs
    Ludmila
