The cubs were born on December 16, 2022. They turned four months old on the 16th of April. The cubs were clinically examined by the zoo veterinarians and they were chipped and their gender was determined – the twins are girls.
Gerda’s babies are growing fast, playing new games every day and even being a bit mischievous.
A couple of months ago they were walking cautiously with shaky paws, but now they are running around the cage with confidence. They can dig little dens and slide down in the snow that’s left.
Now the zoo announces a competition to find the best names for Gerda’s and Kai’s twin girls.
The visitors already have some interesting suggestions for us. We can already see that some names are heard more often than others.
The names will be chosen in several stages.
– Stage 1 from 19 April to 14 May 2023. At the end of the first stage 10 names will be selected.
– Stage 2 From May 17 to May 27, 2023 two names will be chosen from the ten most popular names by voting.
– The results will be announced on June 1, 2023. The names of the winners will be announced during the celebration of the Day of Protection of Children in the Novosibirsk Zoo and then will be published on all official pages of the Novosibirsk Zoo.
The allowed number of names for the Stage I from one participant – not more than 5 names.
Propose your own name suggestions:
– In the comment field on the channel https://t.me/nsk_zoo
-Write in personal messages in our group “Vkontakte”.
– Write and leave them in a special cube near the polar bear enclosure.
I don’t think the above mentioned channels can be used by us but here’s an email adress if some of you want to write to the zoo:

Please, give me a nice name!
Mervi’s note: I really hope these adorable girls get nice and unique names. I have some names in my mind: Masha, Sasha, Maruschka, Ninotschka ….
I only hope none of them gets the name Nanook. That name is ‘suffering’ of inflation! I think Gerda agrees with me! 🙂

Dear Mervi!
The two female polar bear cubs in Novosibirsk are really as sweet as sugar. Like you, I hope that they will be given names that have not yet been given, or have only been given very rarely!
What a shame that they are growing up in a time that is so uncertain and full of problems and worries. Their future is also far from secure and I only hope that after their childhood they can be placed well and lovingly cared for in an acceptable environment and not just disappear!
Hugs
Anke
Yes, that’s right. Bears with the name Nanook or Nanuq really do exist very often.
So wait and see what the names of the two enchanting girls will be.
Hugs,
Anita
OH MY, these girls are soo pretty and most of all, they are sooo WHITE! And whatever their names will be, like all of you, I hope that they will go to a decent zoo when they are old enough.
Thank you very much dear Mervi.
Best wishes to Gerda, Kai and their babies.
