Polar Bear Academy in Yorkshire

6.2.2023 – Photos by Pat Waldron

If Raspi could see his gorgeous sons Indie and Yuma now he would be the proudest papa in the world – that’s for sure. Of course, even mama Flocke is happy knowing her sons have grown to beautiful teenagers.

Indie is a handsome guy and he’s isn’t afraid of sharing a piece of his mind when he finds it necessary. 🙂

Look, what a big boy I am!

Yuma has seen something interesting in the water.

It’s a white barrel – one of his favourite toys!

yuma3

How elegantly he lifts the barrel  with his nose. Chapeau!

The older boys in the enclosure have dedicated some hours of their days for educating the young guys. We could say they have established a Polar Bear Academy and, naturally, they are multi talented professors!

It looks like Nobby is teaching Yuma how to tell the difference between all kinds of smells. I hope he didn’t have problems with gases …. 🙂

Yuma thanks him with a gentle kiss.

Sisu is a very gentle polar bear so maybe he’s the most suitable wrestling partner for the youngsters.

Dear Yuma, you nee powerful paws to destroy the toys the keepers give us. Please, bear in mind – there’s no such thing as an unbreakable toy!

I wonder what Sisu said because Yuma is laughing loud. The teacher and his student seem to have lots of fun together.

Now it’s Indie’s turn to have a lesson in polar bearish living.

Sisu pointed out the importance of being ‘a sly fox’ when you try to pinch the others’ food.

Indie, listen carefully – I will say this only once: Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. That’s what Muhammed Ali used to say.

sisuIndie1

Indie was all ears because in his opinion pinching others’ food is one of the most important skils one needs. 🙂

Dear Sisu, thank you for the lesson! How about a high five?

  1. Dear Mervi and Pat
Thank you for this charming look at the cubs and their “teachers” at Project Polar at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

  2. Dear Pat and dear Mervi!
I am thrilled by these pictures and their apt, partly hilarious subtitles – “problems with gases” – !
You can see that Flocke’s boys are not quite fully grown yet in the photo of Indie with the big mouth and the still somewhat short legs. Kind of cute. And with the following ones, where he is standing upright, I melt…
There are so many great pictures of this special polar bear academy that I can’t decide on a favourite and am just happy about all of them.
    Thank you!
There is snow in Berlin today and I hope in Yorkshire too!

    Hugs

(Of course a friendly “TERVE” to SISU is a must!)

    Dear Mervi

It’s nice that Flocke’s boys are so inquisitive and learn quickly.
But they also only learn from the best!!!
Thank you for the enchanting series of photos.
The captions are cheerful and have brought more than a smile to our faces.

I wish teachers and students a good time together and much success!

    Hugs,
    Anita
