Fiete lives now in Budapest

3.1.2023 by Mervi

As you may know Fiete has moved to Fővárosi Állat- és Növénykert (Budapest Zoo) on the 21st of December 2022. Before you can read the information from Budapest I want to give a very short resume of Fiete’s life so far.

Fiete was born on the 3rd of December 2014 in Rostock. His parents were Wilma and Lars who are no longer with us.

I had the great pleasure and privilege to visit him in Rostock twice.

On the 11th of November 2016 Fiete moved to Sostó Zoo in Nyíregyháza, Hungary.

Information from the Budapest Zoo:

The polar bear enclosure in the Budapest Zoo has been renovated and it’s been empty during the works. It’s a 150 year old tradition that in this zoo we have polar bears so we gladly followed the request to bring a young polar bear to Budapest.

The European Art Conservation Program would like to place more polar bears in the polar bear breeding centre that will soon be built in Nyíregyháza, so now there was an opportunity to move the male of the current breeding pair from Nyíregyhaza to Budapest. The female Snezcana in Nyíregyháza will have new companions until the end of the year.

In Hungary they are polar bears only in Nyíregyháza (Sostó Zoo) and in Budapest.

Before the transport of the 8-year-old Rostock-born Fiete, his prospective keepers got to know his habits and favourite treats. They also discussed with our colleagues how to rehabilitate the animal without problems to her home.

Mervi’s note: Dear Fiete! I’m so sorry you had to move again and leave Snezcana but I hope you will soon have a companion. Be a brave, happy boy and stay healthy!

  1. Dear Mervi,

I am also sorry that Fiete had to move and now two bears are alone in two different
Zoos alone, I wish both of them that everyone gets company again soon.

Thank you for the photo review of his life so far.
The enclosure as “nursery” in Rostock was horrible, if you look at it today!

  2. Die allerbesten Wünsche für den guten Fiete in der neuen Heimat, aber auch für deine zurückgebliebene Gefährtin! Mögen sie jeweils bald wieder neue Freunde bekommen!

    Liebe Grüße von Brigitte.

  3. Dear Mervi!
It is strange that Fiete moved. I hope he will be happy at the new place.
    Hugs
    Ludmila

  4. Dear Mervi!
The update about Fiete doesn’t exactly make me happy. I am sorry that he had to move again, although he got along well with Snezcana.
Some of the decisions of the European Art Conservation Program are difficult to understand, because they don’t seem to take the welfare of the animals into consideration.
They could have just as easily offered another young polar bear a new home at the renovated facility.
    What a pity!

    Hugs
    Anke

  5. Mervi Thank you for bringing news of Fiete.
I was lucky to see him with Wilma in Rostock before he moved to Hungary.

  6. Poor Fiete. He had to move again.
I hope he gets to stay this time and meet a girl.
    All the best for you!

Thank you, dear Mervi, for this information!
