The secret about the names of our two polar bear twins was revealed today during their first trip to the outdoor enclosure.
KAJA and SKADI are the future names of the two polar bear girls, Zoo Director Antje Angeli announced together with Zoo Minister Dr Till Backhaus and Lord Mayor Claus Ruhe Madsen.
Kaja means the beautiful, the pure and Skadi is the name of the goddess of hunting and winter. Both names have their roots in the Nordic region.
The zoo director is very pleased with the development of the twins. In particular, the smaller of the two cubs, Skadi as of today, is quite cheeky. When she wants to play, she clamps down on her sister until she is awake. She does the same with her mother. With these character traits, she clearly takes after mother Sizzel, according to the keepers. The bigger of the sisters, Kaja, has a rather calm character and is thus very similar to the relaxed father Akiak.
From now on, mum Sizzel and her two girls will be visible to all zoo visitors when the three are out and about in the outdoor enclosure. The prerequisite was that the cubs could walk safely. The trio will probably stay in the mother-child enclosure with the shallow water pool for the next two months.
