Polar bear Blizzard at the Karlsruhe Zoo died on the 5th of February. The zoo keepers found him dead in the indoor enclosure, where he had been kept under surveillance since Monday, after he had received veterinary treatment for a wound on his thigh under anaesthetic. A blood test had already revealed his extremely high kidney values.

After his condition had been stable during the week, it worsened considerably on Friday. Another anaesthetic was planned for Sunday to check his condition. “The fact that Blizzard had such bad kidney values was a nasty surprise for all of us. But we have to assume that this problem had already existed for a longer period of time without the animal showing us anything about it. Also, we cannot say anything about the reason for these extremely bad values. We are now hoping for more information from the pathological examination,” reports zoo veterinarian Dr Marco Roller.

“For us, this is the next bad news after all the bad news with the bird flu cases in animals from our zoo stock,” says zoo director Dr Matthias Reinschmidt. Blizzard had moved from the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg to Karlsruhe in May 2020. There he lived with the female Charlotte. Blizzard turned 15 years old.
