28.10.2022 – Source: Erlebnis-Zoo Hannover
Our raccoons, meerkats and polar bear Nana enjoyed a different kind of animal activity today (27th of October) : they were surprised with Halloween pumpkins filled with all kinds of treats – in keeping with the upcoming spooky festival.
The animals curiously eyed the bright orange “things” with the beautiful and artistic carvings.
While the raccoons were rather timidly roaming around the pumpkins, the meerkats were curiously unafraid, scratching and nibbling away.
Polar bear Nana easily carried the heavy balls over the rocks …
…. and killed them with her powerful paws in polar bear style.

for the animals the surprise with pumpkins in Hannover Zoo is already a tradition and always a nice and mostly nutritious change. Unfortunately, it has been seen less often in Berlin zoos in recent years or we did not get photos of them?
For guenons they are even an adventurous hiding place and polar bears smash them in their special way with a swipe of their paws, just like the melons.
The keepers always go to a lot of trouble, because cutting out the hard shell is not so easy.

Thank you for these partly funny, partly scary photos! I am happy about every zoo that keeps its animals happy with special experiences and activities. Halloween and big pumpkins provide a good opportunity for this.
It’s a pity that the creations so lovingly created by the keepers only have a short existence, especially with the polar bears…
I found the photo of the pumpkin apparently eating the meerkats a bit creepy, and the last one, with a meerkat peeking out of the pumpkin, particularly funny.

Super selection of photo’s from the ‘halloween party’ at Hannover Zoo. Something different always arouses curiosity in animals and the need to investigate. Thank you also to the keepers at Hannover for their lovely ‘artwork!’

It is a great idea to give the pumpkins to the animals. I like the color of pumpkins, it make some grey days colorful.

Thank you for the nice report from Hanover.
No matter what you think of Halloween, but the big pumpkins are a cool change for the animals every year.
I think orange (pumpkin) and white (Nana) is the best colour combination.

Nana is looking perfect just like her mum Milana. Hanoveris a very nice zoo and the tradition with the pumpkins is a good one.
