In the autumn of 2010, a pair of Kamchatka brown bears arrived in Brno to the new built exhibition called Beringie. Bears named Kamchatka and Yelizar. They were captured in the wild in Russia in 1996, when they were about 3 years old. They lived in small cages in the Russian Rostov-on-Don Zoo and then moved to the Brno Zoo, where a new large modern enclosure was prepared for them. It took a few weeks for them to get used to the new habitat, they were afraid to walk in a larger space.

At the end of January 2012, two cubs were born to them, the boys were named Kuba and Toby, two years later they went to the Ukrainian zoo.
In 2016, a male was born, who was named Bruno. He was a little rascal and a showman, he soon won the hearts of visitors. Very soon he learned what his parents could do – to catch thrown fruit or fish while standing, to ask for food with his paws, to wave to visitors. In 2019, he was moved to the Czech Děčín Zoo. I go there to visit him.

In July 2019, after long-term health problems, Yelizar was put to sleep. Only mom Kamchatka remained from the whole family.

In 2021, seven-year-old female Irina arrived in Brno from France.
The bears live separately, the enclosure was divided into two parts. Irina lives in the pool area and she is closer to the visitors. Kamchatka prefers to stay in seclusion, where she can relax, due to her age.
Irina quickly got used to the new habitat, she likes contact with visitors.
Dear Mervi!
My love of animals is not limited to one or two species, but especially (brown) bears are somehow close to my heart. I will never forget “our brownies” at Berlin Zoo and miss them sorely!
It’s a great pity that the beautiful and adorable Kamchatka bears in Brno are now only in pairs and also separated, they obviously have a good and generous home there.
I hope that Irina will not be alone for the rest of her life and that the story of these great brown bears will continue in Brno.

Dear Martina,
thank you very much for your detailed report about the brown bears in Prague Zoo.
Yes, there are always bears that are particularly communicative with visitors and that is of course especially charming.
I wish Madame Irina a wonderful life and send you my best regards.

Beautiful animals: I like the big brownies!
I wish Irina all the best, maybe she will
have a partner in the future… 🙂
Thank you very much dear Martina. Best wishes to Kamchatka and Irina.
Dear Martina
I really like these big beautiful brown bears. Unfortunately, I rarely see one or the other
Kamchatka bears.
Thank you for the interesting post with all its beautiful pictures.
Hugs,
Anita
