This time I thought you would like to see some photos taken by Gudrun in 2008 when Knut was still ‘een kleenet Kind’.
We all remember the funny ball games. Very often even the visitors were allowed to participate.

Knutis photos and videos with his ball games alone would fill a thick book. The ball pumkin was of course especially funny and his catching of any kind of his food was terrific!
Oh yes, dear Bear, so many events from the seasons remain unforgettable with you and the winter and snow pictures are in the first place!
Also to you, dear Dumba, many thanks for the beautiful picture of Knut with Markus Röbke, which I did not know yet. Because of the infinite number of smooching pictures of THomas Dörflein with Knut, one easily forgets the equally close relationship of Markus and Ronnie to Knut.

liebe Dumba,
allein Knutis Fotos und Videos mit seinen Ballspielen würde ein dickes Buch füllen. Der Ballpumkin war natürlich besondere witzig und seine Fangkünste von jeglicher Art seines Futters war grandios!
Ach ja, liebes Bärchen, so viele Ereignisse aus den Jahreszeiten bleiben unvergesslich mit dir und die Winter-und Schneebilder stehen dabei an oberster Stelle!
Auch dir,liebe Dumba, vielen Dank für das schöne Bild von Knut mit Markus Röbke, das ich noch gar nicht kannte. Aufgrund der unendlich großen Zahl der Knutschbilder von THomas Dörflein mit Knut vergisst man leicht die ebenso enge Beziehung von Markus und Ronnie zu Knut.

Wenn man heute durch den Berliner Zoo geht, kann man kaum glauben, dass es solche Szenen tatsächlich gab. Ich erinnere mich noch gut an mein Entzücken und meine Zuneigung zu diesem Ausnahmebären und bin sehr dankbar, diese Zeit und den damaligen Zoo mit all seinen Tieren und Pflegern erlebt zu haben.
Die Eisbärenanlage ist seit Katis Tod, Weihnachten 2021, verwaist und auch Knuts damalige Nachbarn im Bärenrevier – Braunbären, Polarwölfe, Malaienbären, Kragenbären – die alle Teil der Geschichte waren, gibt es dort nicht mehr. So viel Verlust! Die Lippenbären leben nun schon lange hinter drei Meter hohen, mit bedruckter Folie beklebten Glasscheiben, die oft beschlagen sind… Ich bin fast froh, dass Thomas Dörflein, Hartmuth Wiedenroth und Doris Webb, um nur einige zu nennen, den Niedergang dieses tollen Reviers nicht erleben mussten.
Vielen Dank, dass Du, zusammen mit Gudrun und anderen Fotograf(inn)en und Dumba mit ihren schönen Collagen, unsere Erinnerungen lebendig erhältst.

Walking through Berlin Zoo today, it’s hard to believe that such scenes actually existed. I still remember well my delight and affection for this exceptional bear and am very grateful to have experienced this time and the zoo at that time with all its animals and keepers.
The polar bear enclosure has been deserted since Kati’s death, Christmas 2021, and Knut’s then neighbours in the bear enclosure – brown bears, polar wolves, Malayan bears, ruffed bears – who were all part of the story, are no longer there either. So much loss! The sloth bears have now been living for a long time behind three-metre-high glass panes covered with printed foil, which are often fogged up… I’m almost glad that Thomas Dörflein, Hartmuth Wiedenroth and Doris Webb, to name but a few, didn’t have to experience the demise of this great sanctuary.
