24.12.2020 by Mervi, Dedicated to the memory of Teddybärenmutti
Needless to say that this has been a very strange year. I’m not going to write the word starting with the letter ‘c’ because all of us have heard it thousands of times. Our Canadian friend Dave dave said it so well: ‘Let’s hope that next year ‘corona’ just means beer and Donald is just a duck’. Ooops! I wrote the ‘c-word’ anyway … well, it’s not so easy to avoid it!
The year 2020 began with very sad news. Our beloved Teddybärenmutti left us. She’s deeply missed but I hope she’s happy in her heaven. I can almost hear her laughing ….
However, despite all the sadness and illness we will try to enjoy the lights and brightness of Christmas. Maybe some of you even have snow!
As usual I have some Christmas cards for you all – some of them are even adressed to special friends.
Anna and Elsa in Bremerhaven send their special greetings to Birgit who’s their greatest fan.
Our American furry friends Aurora and her son Kulu adress this card to Molly and Michelle who have generously shared their photos here.
Gerda is not only a proud mother of Shauna and Nordi. Her daughter Shilka has made her a grandmother and, naturally, Kai to a grandfather.
Thanks to our Russian friends Anna, Arkadi, Oksana and Nina we’ve been able to follow this sweet family for many years now. I hope our co-operation will continue even in the future.
Every polar bear cub is a miracle and three of them is a super miracle! Flocke gave birth to an adorable trio – Indiana, Tala and Yuma. Papa Rasputin has been on a travelling foot – first he moved to Doncaster and now he lives in Tallinn with Friida. Maybe Flocke’s trio will have a half brother or sister next year ….
This family’s special greetings go to MoniK, Renee and Laurence, Dagmar and Frank: Hopefully you can meet us in the Spring!
Tonja and Hertha don’t need any presentation. The life of the two ladies in the Tierpark Berlin is well documented in this magazine. The fluffy girls send their best Christmas greetings to papa Wolodja, Monika aus Berlin and Gudrun.
Sisu has moved to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park to join Nobby, Luka and Hamish. He sends his best Christmas greetings to mama Venus in Ranua. Of course, he also sends his best greetings to big brother Ranzo, the beautiful Nora and their lovely daughter Finja in Vienna.
Sisu is hoping for some snow for Christmas but he’s very glad having nice friends now.
Dear Sheila, next time you visit me, please, say ‘terve’ so I will know who you are! Terve simply means ‘hello’ in Finnish.
Nora’s and Ranzo’s adorable daughter Finja is one year old now. They posed nicely together for this card. Special greetings are going to Evi in Tallinn and Jutta in Vienna. Thank you both for all the great photos!
Aron from Tallinn and Quintana from Munich moved to the Zoo de la Flèche. Hopefully they will have a happy life together in France. Their Christmas greetings go to Friida, Giovanna and, naturally, to Anita and Evi.
Snow Lily celebrated her 36th birthday in November. The sweet lady is amazingly playful and agile considering her age. May her Christmas be as white as her fur!
Katjuscha is another 36 years old polar bear lady and even she’s still going strong. Her special greetings are on the way to Oxford to a gentleman with the name Ralph. What luck the borders are always open for our polar bear friends!
The year 2020 started with sad news but in the end of this ‘extraordinary’ year we received happy news from Orsa. Ewa gave birth to cubbie and the proud father is, of course, Herr Wilbär. The baby is now three weeks old and so far everything’s going well. I’m sure Ewa’s and Wilbär’s friends in Germany and Netherlands are wishing the baby best of luck and lots of health.
We can’t have any photos of the happy family but in our virtual polar bear world everything’s possible so here Ewa and Wilbär are happily dancing and the baby bear is admiring the parents.
Naturally we will always remember our magic bear Knuti!
I want to thank all the photographers and reporters that have kept this magazine going despite the closed zoos and other restrictions.
Monika aus Berlin, Gudrun, Ludmila & Uwe, Patricia Roberts, Ralph Morton, Anita, Sheila Baker, Petra Ballon, ElaNürnberg, Dumba, MoniK, Gisela H, John Gomes, Molly Merrow, Michelle Rippey, Jutta Kirchner, Hans Muskens, Evi from Tallinn, Mme Giraffe, Renee & Laurence, Anita, Marko Junttila and many others – thank you ever so much for helping me keep this magazine going! I’m sorry if I forgot to mention someone …. but all the contributions are very much appreciated!
FROM US ALL TO YOU ALL!
