Since we had to cancel our Rostock trip last Augusti we’ve been planning a new trip and on the 18th of April we finally were heading towards the nice town by the Baltic Sea. We wawed our paws to the port of Trelleborg and had a pleasant crossing over the sea.
We arrived in our hotel in the afternoon so it was too late to visit the zoo. The best thing to do was to enjoy a good dinner and then go early to bed. The following morning our ‘adventure’ would begin!
The day hadn’t a very good start. I noticed that the hem of my duffel coat was resolved! I don’t understand why I hadn’t seen it before! It just wouldn’t do to meet Fiete looking like a bag lady! Luckily I had packed my old rain jacket in the suitcase so there was no need to panic. 🙂 Even though the weather was rather chilly and windy I hoped the old jacket would keep me warm.
Our hotel had provided us with tram tickets so after a breakfast in a nearby café we could just take the few steps to the railway station. The tram line 6 offers a ride to the zoo but also some nice sightseeing – and the the best thing is that it stops just outside the Trotzenburg zoo entry.
After purchasing the tickets we started walking to – surprise, surprise – the polar bears’ enclosures.
My heart started beating in turbo speed when I caught sight of Fiete! What a wonderful feeling to see him ‘live’! He was busy looking for something under the wood. We’ve seen in Gisela’s reports how he tried to hide toys here. Maybe he had succeeded because he kept digging with great energy.
Nice to meet you, folks. Sorry, but I’m rather busy at the moment!
We don’t know what Fiete was looking for but obviously there was something …
Maybe a little kick on the wood would do the trick …..
Are you still there? I certainly would need a couple of helping paws here!
OK, I take a little break for posing. Please, feel free to express some flattering words!
What the heck! I give up now – there are so many other things to do for a polar bear boy than play hide and seek with toys.
Fiete has, of course, grown a lot since our visit almost exactly a year ago. When he’s standing next to Vilma there’s hardly any difference in size. However, in spite of his size he still has a cubbie like face – oh bear, he’s so lovely!!!
Unfortunately Vilma was again showing the stereo type behaviour. She kept walking …..
…. throwing her head from side to side and then she started walking again. Over and over again.
She is a very beautiful polar bear lady. I don’t know why she ‘falls back’ to the strange behaviour. Luckily this isn’t her normal way but it happens every now and then.
You can see that she still has the ‘milk bar’ although it isn’t open as often as Fiete would like ….
Because Vilma kept walking all the time it wasn’t easy to catch the mother and the son in the same photo. There was no interaction between Vilma and Fiete this day. They both ‘ran their own race’ ….
Of course, we also wanted to say ‘hello’ to Vienna! The old lady was lying on the top of the stairs looking as beautiful as always.
When we asked how she was doing she started to walk down the stairs. She did it very gracefully considering the injury in her hind leg.
What did you expect? I may have a little injury and I limp a little but I’m in a very good shap for my age!
The super Mama/Grandma certainly looks very good!
We had a long chat with Vienna. Maybe the other visitors were rolling their eyes hearing us talking to the bear lady but that didn’t preven us from exchanging words about how it feels to get older. 🙂
Talking about getting older ….. our legs and backs reminded us of the necessity of a coffee break so we went to the restaurant Lodge. After a refreshing ‘time-out’ we continued to see even other animals. This time we really DID see many kinds of fourlegged friends so there will be a separate article about them.
When we came back to Fiete something in the water had caught his interest.
With a big splash he jumped into the water and we saw the ‘target’ – the yellow ball. We had a nice shower, too. Although the water drops were very cold we understood Fiete wanted to give us a warm welcome in his way!
First there was a water ballet with the ball …..
…. and after that a playing session on the ground started.
Dear visitors, did you see how elegantly I treat the ball?
Hehehee, this ball believes it’s a rolling stone.
We were mighty impressed by Fiete’s innovative way of transporting the ball. He kept it under his belly between the front legs and moved forwards at the same time! What a clever boy he is!!
With the energy of a power plant Fiete kept playing with the ball. Every now and then it fell into the water and our bear boy carried it up again and again and again.
After the long playing session even an energetic polar bear boy gets tired and Fiete left the ball in the water.
I think I’m going to have a nap now.
See you again tomorrow!
We said ‘bis Morgen’ to Fiete, Vilma and Vienna and walked to the exit. Because the zoo shop wasn’t in ‘our end’ we decided to buy some souvenirs from the lady at the entry/exit. We almost emptied the stocks of cards, books and other things and, naturally, we also bought two paws.
Our first day in the zoo was fantastic but little did we know – the following day would be even better – a dream come true! More about it in the next report! Stay tuned
