Checkpoint Berlin in December 2015

13.12.2015 by Mervi and Vesa

In the evening of the 4th of December it was time for the traditional meeting in ‘Zur Kneipe’. There are some famous adresses everybody know – Downing Street 10, Baker Street, Savile Row, Fifth Avenue, Unter den Linden … I would like to add Rankestrasse 9 to the list!

The Kneipe was very crowded this evening. We were located in the ‘smokers’ room’ – without so much smoke this time. As law obeying citizens the smoking lot went out for a fag.

The photos above were taken by Dumba. Thank you so much for your permission to use it in our report!

The atmosphere is always very cosy and it’s nice to be warmly welcomed by the familiar personnel. Although there’s no chance to have a chat with everybody I think this meeting is one of the highlights of the year for many of us. We don’t need so many words to express ourselves! The smiling faces and the sound of laughter is enough.

checkpoint5

For my brother Jyrki this was his first Kneipe-meeting but I hope he’ll join us even in the future. He seemed to have a good time anyway ….

checkpoint6

The sister’s face isn’t exactly a Mona Lisa imitation either

checkpoint7

SylviaMicky had brought this nice decoration. With deep sighs we were thinking that the following day would have been Knut’s 9th birthday.

checkpoint8

Let’s hope our Kneipe will remain the cosy place it is. We have enough of modern bars and cafés which I find very dull and boring. They totally lack the charm of the Kneipe!

checkpoint9

We had a great time again with yammy food and the beer wasn’t too bad either …. 🙂 I must give a virtual rose to our waitress who really was very efficient and fast – in spite of the minor chaos!

checkpoint10

The next day was dedicated to a zoo visit and in the evening to the Knutitis meeting in a restaurant called Schnitzelei. Can you guess what the specialities of this restaurant are??

checkpoint11

Now there’s even a wonderful banderol for the Knut Community!

checkpoint12

Marina had done a great job decorating the tables. The napkins were too lovely to be used so we took them with us.

checkpoint13

We shared the table with Ludmila and Uwe and, naturally, we had a lot to talk about.

We were the last ones to leave the party but we were not too tired to take the obligatory photos by the bears outside our hotel.

We have many traditions to carry on during our Berlin trips. One of them is the ‘private meeting’ at Dumba’s home. As usual our hostess had made great efforts to make us feel welcome. Thank you so much, dear Dumba, for the good food, the refreshing drinks and the lovely gifts!

You don’t have to go hungry in Berlin! Not thursty either!

Dear Dumba and Annemarie, it was great to spend an evening with you. Thank you for being such fantastic company!

My brother left early on Monday morning but Vesa and I had a whole day for doing some shopping and visiting the Christmas Market near Gedächtniskirche.

This Christmassy ‘landscape’ met us in the Europa Center.

The market stalls were just being made ready for opening but it was nice to take a walk in the market anyway.

Tuesday morning came and it was time to wawe ‘Auf wiedersehen’ to Berlin. The last thing we saw in our hotel was this ginger bread house.

checkpoint27

We want to thank everybody for the nice evenings. Thank you even for all the lovely gifts we received.

We can assure you that ‘wir haben noch einen Koffer in Berlin’!

Wolfgang Im Memoriam

When we were home remembering the happy moments in Berlin we received very sad news. Our friend Wolfgang had been found dead in his hotel room.

It feels so unreal – only a week ago we were having a good time together. Again we were reminded of how happiness and sadness walk hand in hand.

It gives us a little comfort to think that Wolfgang spent his last days among friends.
