Thursday in Aalborg was a special day thanks to Jeanette Johnsen and Susanne Hansen, who had organised with the Zoo as “Friends of the Zoo” for us to meet and feed the Polar Bears, with one of the keepers.
The first of the four Polar Bears to come inside to greet us were Nuka and Quillak. Looking clean and white, the sisters were nearly as big as mother Malik. They are now nearly the same size, making it impossible to tell who is who?
The cubs have long legs and big paws, which suggests they are growing up to be large and impressive bears.
Our little group were all very excited. It was hard to know whether to join in feeding the girls or take pictures of them. I think we all managed to do both.
These snacks went down very well with the girls.
Molly brought some grapes with her, which proved to be a hit with the bears.
Nuka and Quillak are now much more grown up. I love this shot of them concentrating on the next snack.
Molly Merrow has a particular rapport with Polar Bears. Though we were all amazingly lucky to have close encounters with them behind the safety of the thick steel bars.

I am very grateful to Jeanette for taking this photo of me and allowing me to use it here. I have been visiting Nuka and Quillak since 2017 and hope that they will enjoy their new home in Belgium. They have a special place in my memories.
