Knut in Autumn 2010

5.9.2025 – Photos by Gudrun

This time we celebrate Knut’s monthly birthday with some wonderful photos taken by Gudrun in October 2010.

This was the special Knut-Ecke where he spent a lot of time.

Even in this ‘stony landscape’ he seemed to be figuring out how to bring green plants to it. We all remember how green his small enclosure was.

A nice pose for the visitors. He knew how to do that ….

  1. Dear Gudrun und Mervi!
Thank you for the pictures of Knut. He is still in our hearts.
    Hugs

  2. Dear Mervi and Gudrun!
In my opinion, the last period with the Golden Girls at the large facility was the saddest time in Knut’s life. It was only when he started playing with his mother Tosca that everything seemed to relax and we hoped that everything would be fine… Shortly afterwards, he was dead.
I am very glad that I was able to experience the time before that with many friends at the small facility, when he was still happy.

    Hugs
    Anke

  3. Liebe Mervi! Liebe Gudrun!

  5. Dear Mervi
So much has changed in the 15 years since Knut had to be re-homed in Berlin Zoo from his old enclosure.
In Berlin alone at that time there were five Polar Bears with Tonja on her way making seven when Knut died.
In Britain we only had Mercedes in Scotland and Zara living privately in England.
Today Berlin Zoo has no Polar Bears other than a statue of Knut while the UK now has four parks with twelve Polars living in wide open spaces.
Knut was instrumental in renewing popular concern about Polar Bears and led to my country creating these safe places for them. He lives on every time Nobby jumps in the Lake at Doncaster.
