When the dark clouds are getting darker in the sky in our wourld we sometimes need a sunshine story. Here’s one sweet story about a little bird called Tweetie. It was published many years ago but the story is so lovely it’s worth publishing again. I hope you agree with me!

Britta-Gudrun is taking care of a little swift baby (Mauersegler) that she found on the ground on her yeard. She kindly asked me to give a name to the baby birdie and I was trying very hard to find a suitable name.
This morning I got unexpected help! When I was drinking my morning coffee a little bird came to our balcony and started singing – it sounded like ‘tweet, tweet, tweet’. For me that was a message that the baby birdie’s name will be TWEETIE!
Here are some photos of the tiny bird. Yes, it’s still very, very tiny and fragile but eats well and is growing all the time.

Tweetie is now three weeks old and Britta-Gudrun has taken some photos to show how sweet my goodchild is. I’m sending Tweetie best possible wishes and greetings. What a lovely bird he already is! Mervi

Dear godmother Mervi,
I am a shy boy and I do not like to be photographed each day, sorry!
At first I was completely naked, then a little shaggy and now with about 4 weeks, I have no more baby down feathers, but already really beautiful feathers, right?
I weigh 47 g and I am doing very well. In the next 14 days, especially my wings need to grow and I have to train my muscles through many exercises by pushups for birds – really!

Okay, I will show you what it means “Little birdie, it is soon time for Africa”
First of all: My “hairdo” is very important because each feather helps me to fly better so each feather needs to be cleaned all day long. It is a long way to Africa – that’s why I have to train my muscels by stretching and pushups.

Am Montag – 14.7.´25 – kam Eisbär Kap ins Freie.
Er wirkt schwer angeschlagen und die Mitarbeiter schauen ihn traurig an.
Es besteht – aus Sicht der Tierärzte – kein weiterer Ansatzpunkt mehr,
was ihn krank macht bzw. wie man ihm noch helfen könnte.
Er atmet schwer, hechelt und kann (im Moment) seinen Kopf nicht mehr heben.
Es wird noch eine (abschließende) Untersuchung geben …

Dear Mervi!
Thank you for cheering us up once again with this touching story with a happy ending. It’s wonderful that Tweetie has managed to grow up and fledge under Britta-Gudrun’s care. My respect! He has become a beautiful bird and I hope he is still flying around healthy and lively.
I am sad that Kap is not yet better and that we may lose him, but I still hope that he recovers. It would be too good to have a happy ending here too.

Zuerst diese wunderbare Geschichte von Tweetje, die noch immer das Herz berührt und froh macht, auch wenn sie sich vor einigen Jahren ereignet hat..👌😊
Und danach die traurige Nachricht von Kap, der uns seit längerer Zeit Sorgen macht…
Der Zoo Karlsruhe hat heute gemeldet, dass er nochmal untersucht werden soll…
Ob es noch eine Chance,eine Behandlungsmöglichkeit für ihn gibt…
Ich bin sehr traurig und doch ein wenig froh, dass er gestern noch mal draußen auf der Anlage gewesen ist.. Ein Dankeschön an Jens für die Fotos und seinen Bericht..

Anke, Mauersegler haben eine durchschnittliche Lebenserwartung von 10 Jahren, die von Faktoren z.B. langanhaltendem schlechtem Wetter, auch bei ihren langen Afrikaflügen beeinflusst werden. Da sie ziemlich ortstreu sind, kann man davon ausgehen, dass sie auch immer wieder dort brüten, wo sie selbst geschlüpft sind.

Danke für diese Info! Es ist schön, sich vorzustellen, dass Tweetie weiterhin durch die Luft flitzt und vielleicht/hoffentlich schon selber für zahlreichen Nachwuchs gesorgt hat. In Berlin gibt es dieses Jahr wieder mehr Mauersegler als in den vergangenen Jahren. Zahlreiche neu angebrachte Nistkästen an öffentlichen Gebäuden zeigen offenbar Wirkung!
