Polar Bear Day in the Mykolaiv Zoo

Mykolaiv Zoo is the only zoo in Ukraine that keeps polar bears. Traditionally, we keep educational events dedicated to these animals every year. On the International Polar Bear Day (27th of February) we held an environmental and educational event with feeding polar bears, during which our guests had the opportunity not only to observe the interesting behavior of the animal, but also to learn many facts about the culprits of the holiday, take part in a quiz and find out what everyone can do to reduce the rate of global warming and to preserve these wonderful animals.

Hello! Nice to meet you all!

It’s heart warming to see how this zoo is taking care of the animals and this day especially their polar bears despite the war.

There was still snow although the pool was free from ice.

Zefirka was born on the 27th of November 2011 in Moskow. Her parents were Simona and Vrangel. Since March 2014 she lives in the Mykolaiv Zoo.

This time I only have photos of Zefirka but even her daughter Smetanka (born on the 8th of December 2017) lives in this zoo. So does even Nanuk who was born in December 2012 in Brno. His parents are Cora and Umka. Nanuk came to Mykolaiv Zoo via Aywaille in Belgium in July 2021.

  1. Dear Mervi!
Thank you for this report on the occasion of Polar Bear day, which, despite the charming pictures of Zefirka, makes one sad to think of the situation in a war zone for humans and animals and despair at the nature of man and the destruction he causes.
I wonder if the warlords and those who caused the war and earn from it ever think of something like karma or the possibility that they could go to hell for their misdeeds.
I can imagine how hard it is to keep a zoo running during war and send my best wishes to the keepers and their protégés, also for a near end to the war!

    Hugs
    Anke
