Pygmy hippopotamus cub presented itself to visitors at Zoo Berlin: On 15 August, the little pygmy hippopotamus Toni, who was born at Zoo Berlin on 3 June, introduced herself to visitors and the press.
Bright-eyed and self-confident, she explored the outdoor enclosure together with her mum Debbie and took a dip in the water. Toni is sure to win the hearts of visitors.
Pygmy hippos live in a small distribution area in the swampy rainforest of West Africa. They flee when in danger. Their stocky build is perfectly adapted to their way of life and helps them to move swiftly through the dense undergrowth.
The forest dwellers are nocturnal and feed on aquatic plants, leaves, tubers and fruit.
Pygmy hippos grow to a length of 140 to 160 cm and a height of 80 cm. Similar to the large hippos, pygmy hippos have glands in their skin that secrete a slimy substance. The mucus protects the skin from strong sunlight. Daily bathing is essential for the suppleness of pygmy hippopotamus skin. If it is dry for too long, the glands secrete a salty mucus that prevents the skin from becoming brittle. A plump, greasy, shiny skin surface is a reliable sign of well-being.
They are solitary animals and live in territories. Males and females only meet to breed. The male then moves on. After about 200 days, the female gives birth to a young animal, very rarely twins. It gives birth standing up on land. The young suckle for six to eight months.
Pygmy hippos are highly endangered, their habitat is being destroyed and the animals are hunted for their meat. Local nature conservation projects aim to prevent the extinction of this species.

No doubt, she (it’s a girl – yipee! 🙂 ) has already won everybody’s heart. Sie hat sicher schon alle Herzen derer, die sie live oder per Foto gesehen haben, schon erobert und sie wird zweifelsohne auch die jener noch erobern, die sie in Zukunft sehen/besuchen werden . . .

Toni ist ein echter Wonneproppen im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes.
Obwohl das Schätzchen noch gesäugt wird, probiert es schon feste Nahrung aufzunehmen.
