The Predator House at Nuremberg Zoo has reopened and is now open again daily from 10 am until the regular closing time of the animal houses at 4.15 pm. Visitors to the house are asked to keep quiet and not to use flash photography. After the birth of the two Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) in mid-September, the house remained closed so that the lions could raise their offspring undisturbed.
In the last two weeks, the zoo has been open sporadically in order to slowly acclimatise the animals to visitors again. Parents Aarany and Kiron are caringly looking after their offspring.
Papa Kiron looks a bit tired but helping Aarany raise two kids can be quite exhausting.
The two lion cubs were born on 16 September 2023. Lioness Aarany accepted and suckled them well right from the start. To avoid irritating the lioness, the zookeepers did not approach her in the first few weeks. However, male lion Kiron stayed with her the whole time and the two were not separated before or after the birth.
Watching mama eating
“The young lions have developed very well. They are now exploring more and more often and the parents are still caring for them. A fortnight ago, we vaccinated and weighed the cubs for the first time. That also went very well,” says zoo vet and curator Dr Hermann Will. At the time of the examination, they weighed around nine kilos. The vaccination is part of the basic immunisation to protect against cat flu and pathogens of the cat flu complex. It has now also been established that they are a female and a male. The names will be determined by the animal keepers who work with the animals every day.
Time to try eating meat …..
… but maybe this big piece of meat is a too big challenge for the cub’s small teeth.

Of course, Petra met even the three polar bear girls living in Nuremberg.
This is Finja
She has inherited mama Nora’s good looks ….
…. but she has also inherited a little from Ranzo ….
Nana had found an eatable treasure
Elva seems to be very amused by something. I would give an euro for her thoughts! 🙂
Elva’s fur looks very interesting. Is that the latest trend in the polar bears’ fashion world? 🙂
Nana and Elva are good friends
Aren’t these photos of Nana and Elva lovely!
This is Akina catching an eye on the visitors
Sweet squirrels are always an ‘extra spice’ during a zoo visit.
Dear Petra! Thank you so much for these lovely photos and all your photos during the year 2023! I wish you a happy new year 2024!

Dear Petra and Mervi
Thank you for this beautiful visit to the big predators in Nuremberg.
I love it that Nuremberg and Munich now have all girl groups like the old days in Berlin Zoo.
The three girls are very different in looks.
Anke
Dear Petra and Mervi!
It’s great that the three polar bear girls have got used to each other and even made friends! I’m happy for the Nurembergers and at the same time I’m slightly green…
The three of them are certainly a big attraction for visitors.
I also particularly like the photo of Akina.
Of course, the lion cubs are adorable and it’s wonderful that they are growing up together in the family with their father and mother.
Hugs
Anke
Liebe Petra und Mervi!
Die Löwenfamilie ist sehr schön.
Die Junge Eisbärinnen sehen super aus.
Hugs
Ludmila
Liebe Petra
Dear Mervi thank you for sharing with us
liebe Grüße
Filomena
The NANA- and ELVA-photos are indeed most lovely.
Squirrels are always an ‘extra spice’ as you call it, dear Mervi
whether they are in a zoo or in pravete people’s garden or ‘food window sills’ or climbing trees in the neighbourhood or on the rim of a busy main street.
Understandable theat NANA was proud of her eatable treasure – as a stupid human I am rather inclined to say ‘Poor turkey!” . . .
