I was sometimes a bit angry with Giovanna because she always ate Knut’s pumpkins. He didn’t have a chance against the “Gewittertulpe”… (original tone Doris)
But this confrontation between the two bears was wanted by the keepers, because Knut should learn to assert himself. I was very relieved when he learnt to relax, developed self-confidence and the two began to play with each other.
Thank you for these bittersweet memories!
I will never forget this dear bear.

That’s a lovely series of photos you took of Knut and Giovanna.
They had already grown closer by then and Knut was also learning to share, namely his beloved surfboard. She usually stole the treats from him, at least that’s how I remember it.

Dear Mervi, you can see these photos again and again and they still touch us just as much today as they did many years ago.

Knut und Giovanna bzw Gianna, wie sie in Berlin genannt wurde, miteinander auf der Anlage zu erleben, hat mich sehr froh gemacht! Mir ist in Erinnerung geblieben, dass Knut immer etwas von seinen Leckereien, die er bekommen hatte, für Giovanna übrig ließ und Giovanna hat stets nach dieser “Liebesgabe oder Freundschaftsgeschenk” gesucht, wenn sie raus auf die Anlage kam…
